     FOREVER  Shwet Musali

Chlorophytum borivillianum

Sanskrit  : Shwet Musali
English name : Safed Musli
Latin name : Chlorphytum borivillianum
Family : Liliaceae. Botanica

Safed musli is known as a Divya Aushadh with unparalleled medicinal properties. It has been used as a chief ingredient in the preparation of many ayurvedic medicines .

Morphology:

It is an annual herb of 1.5 feet height with sub erect lanceolate leaves, erect dense flowered racemoses of white colour & tuberous root system.

 

Ayurvedic Pharmacodynamic Properties:

Rasa

:

Madhur (Sweet)
Guna :  Snigdha (Unctuous), Guru (Heavy)
Virya : Sheet (Cold)
Vipaka : Madhur (Sweet)
Doshakarma :  Vata Pitta pacifying, Kapha aggravating

 

Useful Part: Tuberous root or rhizome.

 

Chemical composition:

Safed musli is rich source of carbohydrate, protein, fibre, saponin, alkaloids, steroid saponins, vitamin, polysacchrides.

Medicinal Properties:

  • Aphrodisiac herb and Vitalizer
  • Anti-ageing (antioxidant)
  • Immunomodulator
  • General tonic
  • Enhances strength
  • Delay fatigue

Medicinal uses:

  • It is an aphrodisiac herb used as a tonic, to cure general debility (physical weakness) and impotency.
  • Its powder increases lactation in feeding mothers .
  • It is very useful in prenatal & postnatal care.
  • It is also an effective remedy for Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes, Piles and Post menopausal Syndrome.
  • It is used for improving Physical and Mental strength in Children.
  • It also improves immunity.
  • It is very effective in increasing male potency and is considered  as an alternate to Viagra.

Dose: Swarasa (juice) 10-20 ml; Churna (powder) 3-6 gms.

Important formulation: Mushlyadi yog , Musli pak

Contraindication: Shwet musli is contraindicated with excess mucus, congestion, kapha or ama .

Summary:

Safed Musli was originally grown in thick forest in natural form, and is a traditional medicinal plant. Mainly its tuberous roots are used in Ayurvedic medicines. These roots are made into powder form and are used for the preparation of nutritive tonic used in general sexual weakness. Nowadays, there is a very vast demand of Safed Musli powder all over the world. In India many Pharmaceutical companies use this powder in different medicines.
